High performance Seat models will now be branded as Cupra, as the Spanish brand separates its tuning arm in a similar move to Abarth and DS.

The first Cupra model will be the Ateca which features a 300PS 2.0-litre TSI petrol engine and all-wheel-drive.

“Cupra is a big opportunity for Seat, for our customers and for the business”, said Seat president Luca de Meo. “The whole project has surfaced as the dream of a group of people who were looking for a way to conquer a new group of car lovers.”

This new brand will still be a part of Seat and Cupra models will be available in selected Seat showrooms.

The company’s vice-president for Sales and Marketing Wayne Griffiths believes that the brand will double its sales within the next five years.

Further Cupra models are expected to be announced later in the year including a Leon ST and Ibiza.
