Toyota has updated the Corolla with revised powertrains, updated infotainment and new driver assistance systems.

The new model is available with 1.8- and 2.0-litre hybrid systems, both offering improved performance and efficiency.

Total power from the 1.8-litre system is 140PS, bringing a 1.7-second reduction in the 0-62mph time to 9.2 seconds.

Despite this performance increase, CO2 emissions have reduced to 100g/km.

For the 2.0-litre system, total output has risen to 195PS and almost half a second has been shaved from the 0-62mph time, taking it down to 7.5 seconds.

CO2 emissions have fallen even further for the more powerful model, which now emits from 98g/km and can achieve fuel consumption of 64.2mpg.

Toyota said it has recalibrated the powertrains so that acceleration feels “natural and rewarding” to the driver.

This has been achieved with a reduction in engine speed during acceleration, while noise under acceleration has also been quietened.

The new Corolla features an enlarged, 10.5-inch multimedia display that presents graphics in high definition and has an anti-glare screen.  The new system comes with an inclusive four years’ access to Toyota’s connected services , giving access to “always on” cloud navigation and real-time traffic and journey information.

There is also a new voice control system that recognises natural, conversational requests to operate the multimedia, or vehicle functions such as opening or closing windows.

The Toyota Safety Sense package, which combines active driving and parking assistance systems, has been upgraded. A new camera system enables the pre-collision detection system to identify potential hazards more effectively.

The Lane Trace Assist (LTA) has also been adjusted to operate with a more natural feel. It now recognises when the driver has moved out of lane while trying to avoid an obstacle (pedestrian or other road users) and temporarily cancels the Lane Departure Warning.

Improvements in the operation and functionality of the systems include Acceleration Suppression, which reacts to sudden use of the accelerator when travelling at low speed; collision avoidance support when making a turn at an intersection; Emergency Steering Assist that can now react to oncoming vehicles; lateral collision avoidance and curve speed reduction.

Over-the-air software updates will keep the functions up-to-date and enable new ones to be added as they become available during the vehicle’s lifetime.

The new Corolla is offered with four equipment grades: Icon, Design, GR Sport and Excel. Each grade is available in both Hatchback and Touring Sports body styles.

Icon includes 16-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, keyless entry, sat-nav, reversing camera, parking sensors and heated front seats.

Design adds 17-inch alloys, privacy glass, ambient lighting, a powered tailgate and auto-folding door mirrors.

The GR Sport build on the Design grade, with a sportier theme that includes 18-inch wheels, sports seats and black door mirror casings.

Range topping Excel features adaptive headlights, leather upholstery, head-up display and blind spot monitor.
