Renault has unveiled an upgraded E-Tech full hybrid 1.8-litre powertrain for its Symbioz and Captur SUVs.

The indirect injection of the previous generation engine has been replaced by a new direct-injection system, which has improved engine performance, reduces emissions and contributes to lower fuel consumption.

The new powertrain also has a larger battery (1.4kWh compared to the previous 1.2kWh) which increases vehicle range in electric mode, optimising fuel efficiency and providing greater flexibility for drivers over short distances.

The new 1.8-litre powertrain delivers 160hp – up 15hp - and offers combined fuel efficiency of 65.7mpg, compared to the previous engine’s 60.1mpg.

CO2 emissions are now from 98g/km and 99g/km on Symbioz and Captur respectively.

The revised powertrain has also improved the 0-62mph times: the Captur now takes 8.9 seconds (previously 10.6 seconds) to complete the sprint, and Symbioz 9.1 seconds (previously 10.6 seconds).

The new E-Tech 160hp powertrain also increases towing capacity from 750kg to 1,000kg.

Renault is also adding a mild hybrid 140hp engine to the Symbioz range. Available with a six-speed manual gearbox, it offers a combined fuel economy of 47.9mpg with CO2 emissions starting at 134g/km.

UK pricing has not yet been announced.
