PSS Hire has responded to ‘soaring customer demand’ with a new fleet of 22 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans.

Roanza Truck and Van supplied PSS Hire with 22 medium-length Sprinter 314 CDIs, complete with livery and with roof-mounted beacons. PSS chose the Sprinters due to their “ability to cope with high-mileage work”.

The Sprinters are powered by 143PS engines and will spend much of their time pulling trailers carrying heavy equipment such as butt fusion machines, underground winches, and coiled pipe.

PSS opted for trailer coupling and vehicles will benefit from Trailer Stability Assist technology, a development of the adaptive ESP.

This can detect the onset of the oscillating motion of the trailer commonly known as ‘fishtailing’ and take corrective action to ensure the driver retains control.

Half of the new Sprinters have replaced vehicles by the manufacturer which has dominated its fleet for some time; however, the remainder represent additions to the line-up.

PSS Hire’s director Mark Hamilton said: “Our new Sprinters will be worked hard, typically covering 50,000 miles a year. We had a couple on the PSS Hire fleet already, which performed really well.

“The vans will be used regularly for towing our assets to and from sites, so the fact that we could add the Trailer Stability Assist function to the Sprinter’s reassuringly comprehensive standard safety specification was also key to its appeal.”
