FORD is launching a new Ford Mondeo Zetec, available from next month with a series of engine improvements which will be extended to the whole of the model range. First previewed at the 1998 British International Motor Show in Birmingham, the Mondeo Zetec continues the sporting theme established by the Fiesta and Focus Zetecs.

The Mondeo Zetec, available in five-door or estate versions, will cost £15,380 on-the-road. It will be powered by either a 1.8-litre or 2.0-litre Zetec E petrol engine, which as well as being quieter and smoother, improves performance and fuel economy on previous engines. Engine noise is said to have been reduced by 50%, while the 1.8-litre Zetec is capable of 0-60mph in 10.2 seconds and the 2.0-litre, 9.4 seconds, returning an average 36.7mpg and 35.3mpg respectively.

Changes to the car's exterior include a mesh front grille, rear spoiler, five-spoke alloy wheels, integral front fog lamps and metallic paint.

Ford says the engine and ride improvements featured in the new models will be introduced throughout the Mondeo range in mid-1999 with no price increases.
