The nationwide service was set up after research by Shell and Green Flag showed customers were confused by the variety of service levels offered and the incremental costs each tier of service incurred.
Shell will offer three cover levels which include Home Call as standard and at fixed rates —£55 for local cover, £85 for national cover and £99 for full European cover — and is committed to reaching customers within one hour.
Crispin Rogers of Shell Capital said: 'The research we looked at highlighted some fascinating insights into what potential customers like and don't like about their current breakdown providers.
'We saw a gap in the market for a simpler, more cost-effective solution that doesn't compromise on quality, but gives the motorist real peace of mind.
'We hope Shell Breakdown Assistance, combining the strengths of two leaders in their respective fields, will be a winner.'
