MADRID has taken its latest step towards encouraging alternative fuels by launching the world's first commercial fleet tests with fuel cell vehicles, in partnership with DaimlerChrysler.

The first Mercedes-Benz Citaro city bus with fuel cell drive was handed over by DaimlerChrysler to the Lord Mayor of Madrid at this year's UITP World Congress.

It is the first of three buses with this zero-emission technology to be operated by the local public transport authorities of Madrid in daily service.

By the end of this year, a total of 30 Mercedes-Benz buses will have been supplied to 10 European cities.

The European Commission is spending more than 20 million Euros supporting the Madrid test programme
