EXECUTIVES and board members are failing to give fleet managers the support they need to run safe, efficient cars and vans.

That was the message sent out loud and clear from the two Hit For Six fleet manager conferences in Oxford and Ilkley last month.

At Ilkley, BBC Business News presenter Declan Curry asked delegates if they were getting enough support from the directors and senior managers of their companies. In a show of hands, only one fleet manager indicated she was satisfied with the level of support from her company bosses.

‘This is a very worrying situation,’ said Curry.

Speakers at the two conferences told delegates how effective risk management using clear policies can save companies large amounts of money as well as reducing their exposure to litigation.

Roger Bibbings, occupational safety advisor for RoSPA, called for director action on health and safety – including work-related road safety – and a joint team to develop an action plan.
