PLANS are being drawn up to allow motorists to pay a toll to drive along a congestion-free motorway lane.

The proposals form part of a Government review into possible improvements to the M6 between Birmingham and Manchester. Lone drivers would pay a fee to use a less congested lane, which would be free to cars occupied by two or more people.

A similar ‘high occupancy’ lane on the M1 between Luton and the M25 begins construction next week.
