STEPHEN Botham, fleet manager, Wiltshire Police

How long have you been in the industry?

I’ve been in the fleet business since leaving school. I have served with two police fleets and been with Wiltshire Police, which currently has 399 vehicles, for 20 years.

Working for a blue light fleet must have its moments?

While there are some routines to the job, each day can be so different, ranging from extra resources for a murder investigation or royal visits to being asked to be an official observer at a night exercise for riot training.

What’s the most unusual request you’ve had?

I was asked to put a milk float on the fleet for undercover work. We borrowed one and it was very successful in clearing up a lot of early-morning crime.

Have you had any embarrassing moments during your career?

I once went to an auction and saw someone I knew across the hall. I nodded and bought a mini van.

Have you plans to move away from the industry?

I think I will always be in the industry. With my job, I’m also in charge of all the police uniform issues and the force’s printing requirements. Life is never dull.
