Anne-Marie Trevelyan has been appointed Transport Secretary by the new Prime Minister Liz Truss, replacing Grant Shapps.

Shapps held the position since 2019, overseeing the controversial expansion of smart motorway schemes and the removal of the plug-in car grant.

Trevelyan moves to her new role from the position as Secretary of State for International Trade and President of the Board of Trade.

She was first elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for the Berwick-upon-Tweed constituency at the 2015 general election.

Following her appointment, Trevelyan tweeted: “Transport is crucial to our lives - bringing people together, creating jobs & connecting the UK with the world.

“Looking forward to getting to work on the many challenges & opportunities transport brings.”

The Department for Transport faces numerous challenges, including the rollout of electric vehicle charging infrastructure and solving the HGV driver shortage. Truss has also voiced support for the removal of motorway speed limits.
