Lexus has unveiled a new concept car what is likely to develop into the next generation GS executive saloon.

The LF-Gh is a hybrid saloon and makes its debut at the 2011 New York Auto Show.

Lexus describes the concept car as taking the idea of a 'grand tourer' a step further, delivering an inspiring drive as well as providing great comfort over long distances.

The current GS450h is available only as a high performance hybrid, but has fallen behind some rival models in terms of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

However, the next-generation GS is expected to be available with a smaller capacity engine linked to an electric drive system, delivering CO2 emissions competitive with current four-cylinder diesel executive cars, such as the BMW 520d, Audi A6 2.0 TDI and Mercedes-Benz E220 CDI.
