Fiat has launched a new three-cylinder mild-hybrid engine for the 500 and Panda, providing lower CO2 emissions and better fuel economy.

Prices start at £12,665 for the 500 Mild Hybrid, which will be available from February.

The Pand Mild Hybrid is priced from £13,855 and will be available in March.

Fitted with a 12-volt belt-integrated starter generator (BSG), the new powertrain promises a reduction in CO2 emissions of up to 30%.

The 1.0-litre powertrain develops 70PS and 92Nm. It replaces the existing 1.2-litre 69PS unit. 

The 500 Mild Hybrid has CO2 emissions from 88g/km (NEDC2) and the Panda 89g/km (NEDC2). Fuel economy for the 500 stands at 53.3mpg (WLTP Combined), while the Panda returns 49.6mpg (WLTP Combined). 

Fiat says the new engine ensures a very high standard of driving comfort thanks to the BSG system, allowing for a quiet, vibration-free restart of the internal combustion engine in Stop&Start mode. 

The BSG is mounted directly on the engine and recovers energy during braking and deceleration, storing it in a lithium battery with a capacity of 11Ah.

This technology allows the internal combustion engine to switch off by shifting into neutral at speeds below 18mph. The dashboard, which displays information on the hybrid system, prompts the driver when to shift.

The special series can be recognised by the ‘Hybrid’ logo on the rear and the exclusive ‘H’ logo, formed by two dew drops, on the centre panel.

The Launch Edition seats are the first in the automotive sector to be made of Seaqual Yarn, the weaving of which produces a special material, certified by Seaqual, derived from recycled plastic, 10% of which originates from the sea and 90% from land. 

The 500 Mild Hybrid and the Panda Mild Hybrid Launch Editions can be ordered from January at Fiat retailers across Europe. The first customer deliveries will arrive in the first quarter of 2020.
