6 2022 BMW X1

BMW has revealed the new X1 compact SUV, which includes a fully electric iX1 variant.

The new X1 is available to order now, priced from £35,130. Prices for the iX1 are yet to be confirmed.

Compared to the outgoing car, the new X1 is larger and offers more space for passengers and their luggage. Changes to the suspension and body are said to improve handling and ride comfort.

In keeping with other new BMWs, such as the 2 Series Active Tourer and the facelifted 3 Series, the X1 and iX1 benefit from the brand’s new eighth-generation iDrive system with a curved twin-screen setup. There’s no rotary controller this time around, however.

The X1 launches with one petrol and two diesel engine options. The entry-level sDrive18d, with front-wheel-drive, produces 150PS and emits from 129g/km of CO2. The xDrive23i and xDrive23d both feature mild-hybrid technology and come with all-wheel-drive. All three are paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission.

Two plug-in hybrid powertrains will also be available: the 245PS xDrive25e and the 326PS xDrive30e. Both use a 14.2kWh battery, giving a zero-emissions range of 48-55 miles. In each application the electric motor drives the car’s rear wheels, while a three-cylinder petrol engine powers the fronts.

The electric iX1 is powered by two electric motors, giving all-wheel-drive, with a power output of 313PS. Its 64.7kWh battery is expected to give a range of 257-272 miles. DC recharging at up to 130kW makes it possible to boost the battery level from 10% to 80% in 29 minutes, or increase range by 75 miles in 10 minutes.

The X1 and iX1 can be specified in one of five trim levels: Sport Premier, xLine Premier, xLine Premier Pro, M Sport Premier, and M Sport Premier Pro.

Sport variants of the new BMW X1 come as standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, with 18-inch alloy wheels as standard on xLine cars. M Sport models feature 19-inch alloy wheels in a bi-colour finish, although both xLine and M Sport can be optionally specified with wheels up to 20 inches – a first for the BMW X1.

Adaptive M suspension is standard for all M Sport models, including the plug-in hybrids and iX1, and is fitted as standard on the BMW iX1 xDrive30 xLine.

A trailer tow hitch is standard on xLine and M Sport Premier models, and is operated electrically at the touch of a button. The maximum permitted trailer load is up to 2,000kg, depending on the model variant (BMW iX1: 1,200kg – provisional value).

The X1 can be ordered now, with pricing for the plug-in hybrids to be announced shortly. The iX1 will arrive later in 2022.
