Vauxhall has introduced a new hybrid engine for the Corsa, which will join the car's existing line-up

The new powertrain pairs a 48v mild hybrid system with a new 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine and a six-speed automatic gearbox. There are power outputs of 100PS and 136PS available.

Vauxhall says the hybrid system reduces the Corsa's fuel consumption by around 20%. The 100PS version can achieve 62mpg and emits from 102g/km of CO2.

The electric motor allows the Corsa Hybrid to be driven short distances on electric power alone under low torque requirements (such as when manoeuvring or under 18mph in city traffic). It also assists the petrol engine under acceleration. This contributes to a 0-62mph time of 10.7 seconds for the 100PS powertrain and 8.6 seconds for the 136PS powertrain.

During deceleration, the petrol engine stops and the e-motor acts as a generator to recharge the hybrid system's battery. The battery also stores the energy recuperated by the regenerative braking system.

In line with Vauxhall’s simplified trim line-up, the new Corsa Hybrid is available in Design, GS and Ultimate specifications. Prices start at £22,890, for the Corsa Hybrid 100PS Design.

The Corsa is also available with a choice of two fully electric powertrains as well as regular petrol engines.
